Haunting Whisper Vineyard

The Haunting Whisper De Chaunac is a great choice for your Thanksgiving table

Haunting Whisper Vineyards is located on a 75-acre property in the Lakes Region between Lake Sunapee and Newfound Lake off Rte. 4 in the town of Danbury. Eric Wiswall and his wife Erin enjoyed exploring the complexities of wine and purchased the property in 2005. They quickly planted 500 vines. With their first production in 2009, they have amped up production with grapes purchased from nearby Stonegate Vineyard.

Erin is the vintner. She has a PhD in biochemistry, but topped that off with a Winemaking Certificate from UC Davis. The Wiswalls aim to make wines that focus on the natural fruit flavors in grapes with a long and slow “elongated” fermentation process. The French oak used in the reds creates a medium toast flavor, rather than oaky flavor. They keep the alcohol content in the 12 percent range for a light-bodied wine that helps showcase the fruity notes.

Haunting Whisper De Chaunac (pronounced day chan nak) is a dry red with a modest cranberry character and smoky notes from French oak. It may be the perfect Haunting Whisper wine for Thanksgiving. Available at many of the New Hampshire State Liquor & Wine & Outlets ($12).

The Haunting Whisper on-site tasting room and retail store is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
