Leadership Greater Manchester’s Business Shower: HealthSource Chiropractic of Manchester

Bringing together chiropractics and progressive rehabilitation

Note from the editor: The Leadership Greater Manchester class of 2021 has launched a Business Shower initiative to help support and promote small businesses in the Greater Manchester area. Each month it nominates and votes for a business to shower with support. The next shower recipient is HealthSource Chiropractic of Manchester. New Hampshire Magazine happily agreed to re-publish the piece and help spread the word about this fantastic New Hampshire business.

Jackie Roy spent some time talking with Jeff Klaubert and Dr. Greer Clemons at HealthSource Chiropractic of Manchester at 545 Hooksett Rd. in Manchester.

Is this your first business?
Klaubert: “No, but this is my first health care business. I was in the corporate world for 30 years, including at Cisco Systems for 16 years. In 2016, I had a marketing and sales training consulting business. I was one of only six people authorized to deliver the business outcomes program for Cisco Systems, and we trained about 350 sellers or so.”

Tell us about yourself and how you got into this business.
Klaubert: “I am the franchise owner. There are about 250 HealthSource clinics — this is the only one in New Hampshire, and there are several in Massachusetts. What’s unique about us is that we are run by extremely passionate chiropractors, and we combine chiropractics and progressive rehabilitation, which is actually physical therapy. The two together are super powerful. Chiropractics obviously puts your body in alignment, but your body may be protecting a weaker area, perhaps what you are coming to see us for. Your brain is protecting you, so the rehab actually strengthens those weaker areas and over time actually retrains the brain.

“I’m not a chiropractor, but this is my post-corporate career — I’m so passionate about it. It’s been such a big part of my life, and I wanted to do something that was in a downtown location, in a way that I could make an impact on the community. Since I have had significant health challenges, I really wanted to help people fix themselves.”

What sparked your passion to want to purchase this and take that risk?
Klaubert: “It’s interesting, and I’ll try to make this brief, but I almost died four or five years ago from sepsis, and fortunately Concord Hospital saved my life. Thank you very much, Concord Hospital. [Taking] massive antibiotics destroyed my gut. My chiropractor at the time (I now see Dr. Watkins and Dr. Greer) did nutritional response testing, which really got me on the path to fixing it. I also saw a naturopathic physician and that really changed my life.

“What I loved about the HealthSource model is that its pretty mainstream. Chiropractics is mainstream, but combining the two (progressive rehabilitation) is so powerful. We also provide supplements and assist with nutrition. We are movement based — a physical clinic — but you need to nourish your body as well, and give it the ingredients and nutrients it needs. So it all comes together.

“As a non-doctor who comes from the technology world, I needed a proven repeatable system that really created big results for people’s lives. That’s what HealthSource does. I’m full-time here, and I consider myself patient number one. In fact, I broke a bone in my back, and I was the very first patient here. We are a patient-owned health care facility.

“You’ll see a lot of technology here. Arguably, we have more technology than anyone else in the Manchester area because I’m a tech guy. But what I do is find the most power tech out there that can help magnify patient outcomes. We can get bigger outcomes, faster. If there is a great tool that I can bring to the market, I’m gonna bring it.”

What has been your biggest challenge moving from a career in IT to Healthcare?
Klaubert: “I have to say team building in a small environment. It’s one of the most difficult things to do — to build a high-performing small team. Every player is super important, no matter what their role. Coming from big business and before that the military, [which was] more of a command-and-control culture. I’ve had to learn a lot of new skills about building business and building small teams. Its all teamwork, 100%.”

Where do you look for guidance in this industry?
Klaubert: “One of the reasons I chose HealthSource is that they have an amazing Master Mind group — like-minded businesses that get together. I’d heard about this when I was evaluating different chiropractic franchises (there are many out there). I chose HealthSource. Dr. Tomshack is the founder of HealthSource, and he is a phenomenally successful chiropractor and businessperson. He is still running the company day to day, and he has a Master Mind group. Somehow I was able to talk myself into that group, and I’m the only non-doctor member. I get to interact personally with Dr. Tomshack on a weekly basis. I have a great support system with HealthSource, and it is all run by great doctors who are also great businesspeople, which is a very rare combination.

“I also have a very active team outside of HealthSource in other industries that I look to, like Leadership Greater Manchester, which is just instrumental for me — it connects me to other local leaders and business owners, so that’s been great. I’ve been participating in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program. I try to surround myself with many different advisors.”

Can you tell us more about your services?
Klaubert: “We offer chiropractic and progressive rehab services. And for a business shower offer, anyone who mentions business showers will get a free chiropractic exam, set of x-rays, and follow up consultation. This is a $200 value.

“We also have a lot of supporting technology. I have a high-powered, deep-tissue therapy laser from LightForce. This machine is [used by] about half of the pro sports teams. If you look at the different therapy lasers in pro sports, this is by far number one. What’s really amazing about this is that it does two things: one, clinically and most importantly, is it helps you heal faster. It accelerates mitochondrial activity. Mitochondria are the power plants in our cells that create calories and convert that to energy to distribute throughout our body. Your mitochondria control the healing process, called the inflammatory cascade, so what we are doing with laser energy, through proper wave length and power, is going deep into the tissue to accelerate the healing process. It even helps bones. It also helps turn off the pain signal from the nerve to the brain, so it instantly helps your comfort level, which can give you a much better experience in rehabilitation.

“We also have a computerized decompression table. That very safely and comfortably creates small amounts of space between your vertebrae, which takes the pressure off of your disks and nerves, letting your muscles relax. It’s one of the most effective treatments for bulging or herniated disks.

“We also have a very focused line of supplementation, including high-quality Omega 3. Our fish oil is very powerful, very high-quality. All of our supplementation here, everything we offer, is about supporting the movement work that we do. Support for the joints, support for the disks. If you’re doing all this physical work but still have a bunch of inflammation in your body, you’re never really gonna get better. So a lot of what we do with supplementation is also about decreasing inflammation. We do a lot of immunity work here too (think Vitamin D), and we’ve got supplements mostly based on olive leaf, which is one of the top five immune boosting supplements.”

Dr. Greer Clemons, why did you choose this practice?
Clemons: “One thing that sets HeathSource apart from other chiropractic offices is the rehab. Yes, adjustments are very important — aligning the spine and taking pressure off the nervous system — but [we also help] to strengthen the joints and muscle around that area so that the body can hold that adjustment. This is what makes those results become long lasting.

“Another reason I chose HealthSource is that everything in science and health care changes so quickly. One of the worries when you leave school is how to stay up to date. Healthsource provides that for us. Also, I am an equestrian athlete, and I always had a passion for building a practice around that. The rehabilitation is a really great add-on for athletes to help them improve their performance.”

When someone comes into chiro and rehab, can they be 100% fixed or is this something that is an ongoing commitment?
Clemons: “It’s different for every person. In a perfect world, if we lived in a bubble, then yeah, you could never need to be adjusted ever again. But you’re never going live a life where you’re not going to step off a curb wrong or sleep wrong.

“For most people, once they have completed their active treatment, getting them out of pain and restoring their function, then we recommend maintenance. This can vary from patient to patient, depending on the state of degeneration in their body, or their age, or how hard they are on their body. That may be once a week for a high performance athlete or it could be once a month for your average activity level person. That just keeps things functioning at its best without having the problem recur.”

How do you manage your health and wellness?
Clemons: “I ride. I hike. I’m outdoorsy. When I’m advising people on their health and well-being, I recommend small changes that are sustainable. So if I were to say, ‘eat better,’ that’s so arbitrary and vague. I like to ask, ‘What are you eating? How can we make small changes? What’s your favorite fruit or vegetable?’ Make sure you are eating two servings of each one of those a day. Increase your water intake by one cup a day. Increase your activity level by five minutes a day. Things that are small so that people don’t get overwhelmed.”
