Annette Lee and Nicole Carrier of Throwback Brewery have a vision – to go “old school” when brewing beer.
Before Prohibition brewers made beer with what ingredients were locally available, and the beer was consumed in the same town in which it was brewed. Lee and Carrier, inspired by those breweries and looking to support sustainable agricultural practices, decided to open Throwback Brewery in North Hampton as a “throwback” to those simpler times.
The brewery’s ultimate goal is to brew beers made only with ingredients available within a 250-mile radius.
After homebrewing for 10 years, Lee started to look into the more serious aspects of brewing. Following several courses and an internship at Smuttynose in Portsmouth, she found she was still enthusiastic and left 20 years in the engineering field to open Throwback.
“I love beer. I love the industry and all of the engineering, chemistry and other geeky stuff that it involves. It all appeals to me,” Lee says.
Throwback Brewery will initially offer four beers, including the Hog Happy Hefeweizen made from wheat from western Massachusetts and a Maple-Kissed Wheat Porter that uses local syrup. Brewed in small-scale batches, the beer will be available in select stores and bars by mid-summer.
