The Aperol Spritz

Aperol is an Italian apéritif that has been around a long time, but recently rediscovered by mixologists. Bright orange in color, it has a unique taste, thanks to the secret recipe with infusions of selected ingredients including bitter and sweet oranges and many other herbs (including rhubarb) and roots. It is lightly alcoholic, just 11 percent, so it combines well with other liquors too.

The classic Italian drink is a spritz — two parts Aperol to one part soda water. Serve over ice and finish with a slice of orange. Or jazz it up a bit with three parts Prosecco, 2 parts Aperol and a dash of soda.

Get a bit more adventurous with an Aperol Bloodhound:

  • 1 1/2 ounces vodka
  • 1 ounce Aperol Liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
  • Combine with ice in a shaker and strain. Serve with an orange slice. Add a salt rim, if desired.

Want the work done for you? A delicious Aperol Spritz is served at the excellent Campo Enoteca (opened by the owners of Republic) located at 969 Elm St. in Manchester.
