Miller Gardens

Winter greens without the use of additional heat.

Joel Miller of Wild Miller Gardens is doing the impossible. He is growing winter greens in a greenhouse without the use of any additional heat. He says, "The sun heats the ground and there is enough stored energy to last until morning." The ground does get a light frosty coat, but the winter vegetables, such as kale and spinach, are hardy enough to take the cold temperatures.

Miller, along with his wife Annalisa, work the land that is adjacent to her parents' property, Tuckaway Farm.

Miller formerly enjoyed travel in a sailboat with his hands on the tiller. Now with his hands on the reins of their draft animals he feels the same joy.

The Millers also raise pastured chickens for eggs, sell raw milk from their Jersey cow, cornmeal from heirloom Abenaki Flint Corn and grow assorted vegetables, including garlic and ginger root. Find them at the Seacoast Winter Market or the farm store.
