*Editor's Note: Unfortunately, we learned that LoMo closed just after publication of this recipe.
I asked bartender David Mastromatteo at LoMo for a Perfect Manhattan and he came up with this mix. In my estimation it was perfect, not too sweet with a nice hint of orange and plenty of depth of flavor from a creative addition of other liquors and liqueurs for enjoying each sip. Each of the ingredients here are historic beverages.
2 ounces Old Overholt Rye (part of a triad marketed by Jim Beam as The Olds with the others being Old Crow and Old Grand-Dad)
3/4 ounce Carpano Antica Vermouth (sweet high-end red vermouth, smooth and not too sweet)
1/4 ounce Dolan Vermouth de Chambéry
Dash of Cardamaro Amaro (Italian herbal bitter sweet liqueur)
3 dashes of Regan's Orange Bitters
Luxardo cherry
- Mastromatteo first rinses the glass in a swish of Dekuyper Crème de Cocoa.
- Pour all of the bourbon and vermouth over ice in a metal cocktail shaker. (If you are serious about making good drinks at home, the ice should be from filtered water when necessary.)
- Stir for 15-30 seconds (making sure not to cause any bubbles or too much agitation).
- Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Add bitters and cherry; stir once more very briefly.
Enjoy!
