Papa Joe’s Humble Kitchen
Is it the secret sauce that makes the burgers so good here? Owner Joe Oneail is not telling. He hand-patties the fresh ground chuck and, after a quick swoosh with the sauce, they are grilled to order. Soft buns from Fantini are soft and meld nicely with the burger.

Gilley’s PM Lunch
They’re historic, they’re folkloric — Gilley’s has been burger heaven for decades of wayward students and late-night revelers for more than 100 years. Now immobile, the diner portion is a 1940s Worcester Diner, the only one of its era in operation. Burger meat is fresh ground and hand-pattied. Be sure to order it with cheese and onions. Maybe order two — it’s about a 2.5-ounce burger. Burgers here are served fast, and hit the spot after a night of revelry. $3.45
