Restaurant designers gave Demeters — built in a former car dealership — the edge of contemporary design, softened with the soul of real wood and thick leather.

Demeters Steakhouse in Portsmouth offers a touch of sports bar, high-end steakhouse and gentleman’s club all in one bite.

The U-shaped bar offers ambiance for mingling or viewing the current sports game on large screens overhead. The cocktail list is inventive or you can double down with a fine Scotch from their worthy collection.

A special bar menu enables a quick or light bite. White tablecloths and tasteful décor with rich wood paneling primes diners for the steakhouse experience. Demeters recently changed beef suppliers to offer a more affordable, yet succulent array of beef options, from petite filets ($35) to hunky cowboy rib eye steaks ($40) served à la cart.

The wine selection is superb and largely focused on big and bold cabs from California to complement the beef. A nice variety of wines are offered by the glass through an argon gas dispensing system, while wine lockers are available for those who choose to have wines from their own collection available. There’s live jazz on Fridays, too.
