Wine Expo New Hampshire

A tasting fundraiser

The best-kept secret in Durham is getting out. Great wineries from around the world — Beringer, Stags’ Leap, Frescobaldi, Joseph Phelps, Louis Jadot and dozens more — join forces in the spring with the University of New Hampshire’s Department of Hospitality Management to offer tastings of their wines.

There will be two carving stations, international cheeses and music by the Tim Theriault Trio to raise money for student scholarships. Along with these wineries’ representatives, Chefs Tom Perron from Mombo Restaurant in Portsmouth and Evan Hennessey from Stages at One Washington and Flavor Concepts Catering in Dover will demo and sample their local specialties.

New this year is a raw bar from Seaport Fish in Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine, and a visiting chef from Italy brought to the event by Banfi Vintners.

This grand tasting event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 30, at the Whittemore Center Arena. Hospitality Management student-volunteers work alongside the wine professionals and answer questions about the hundreds of wines available to taste giving the students the opportunity to work on a large event before graduating.

“It is a win-win collaboration,” says Clayton Barrows, professor and chair of the Department of Hospitality Management.

The cost is $35 per person or $25 for students over 21 with ID. Ticket sales are very limited and can be purchased here.

A post-event contest runs on the event’s Facebook page with the chance to win NH Liquor Store gift certificates for postings of the most creative wine reviews of wines tasted at the Expo. Purchase tickets at wineexponh.com.
