When Worlds Collide

Settling in and setting a new standard.Boyan Moskov had it made in Bulgaria. After training at the Sofia Art Academy and a stint in Sweden he was running a successful pottery business, and then, love struck. Moskov met his wife Anna, a New Hampshire native, when she was abroad as part of a Peace Corp mission. They packed up and came back to the Concord area where Moskov quickly set about to rebuild his studio and his reputation as an artist. Once transplanted in the Concord area in 2007 he hit the ground running. Teaching the potter’s wheel at the Kimball-Jenkins School of Art to start, he was soon juried into the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and in 2009 was awarded Best Decorative Ceramic Piece in the Living with Craft exhibition at the League’s annual fair. Whew.You may have seen his tiny vases at the Concord Arts Market or his brightly colored functional ware with bold designs at league shops. His work is technically excellent and his design statement is loud and clear. You don’t forget a Moskov design.Now, with employees to help produce six lines of functional ware – platters, plates, bowls, mugs and teapots – he is taking time for one-of-a-kind pieces.As shown here, he uses the organic grid lines and the same dark brown stoneware from his bowls and platters, reduces the scale and adds an additional design element. It’s a beautiful refinement of his past work and another new leg to his journey. – Susan Laughlin
