The Delightful Cup & Crumb
The Cup & Crumb is an amazing find on the Gov. Wentworth Highway
Leaving Moultonborough en route to Wolfboro, there is an amazing find on Gov. Wentworth Highway. Tucked off the road is Cup & Crumb, which opened in May. It boasts one of the only (if not the only) espresso machines in the area. A wide selection of from-scratch pastries are offered (croissants that evoke memories of the Champs-Élysées!) as well as outstanding scones (sweet and savory), sticky buns, New York-style crumb cake and a variety of coffee cakes (the espresso cake is delicious). The menu changes daily as everything is baked that morning. Torn between the lemon squares, which had been highly recommended, and a slice of vegetable quiche, my friend and I split each.
There are many difficult decisions here! Breakfast sandwiches with house-made biscuits are available.
The owner, Kim Prause, a former English teacher and assistant principal at Moultonborough Academy, is a home baker and has turned what was formerly an antique shop into a regular stop for locals. There is a fireplace and seating for 10. Wifi is available.
The coffee offered is freshly ground Good Vibes coffee, roasted in North Conway. You may choose an espresso, cappuccino, Americano or a latte. If you prefer tea, Mighty Leaf Tea is featured; choices include chai latte and steeped tea. Both tea and coffee are available iced; you may even choose an iced latte.
Operating in the same space, For Goodness Cakes produces custom layered cakes with a variety of fillings. Pastry Chef Jen Clifford, who trained with Donna Love, operates the business. Cake sizes range from a six-inch to a 12-inch that serves 40 to 55. You may choose from a chocolate, butter almond, carrot or German chocolate cake, and customize the filling and frosting. Fillings range from chocolate mousse to Kahlua to Baileys Irish Cream. Making your choice will be difficult. The flavorful cakes are also sold by the slice. A dessert buffet menu is available, perfect for special events.
The Cup & Crumb has built up a steady clientele, a clientele that’s encouraged to have healthy habits. A sign in the bakery says, “Walk, Run, Bike, let us know — 5 percent discount.” Cup & Crumb is definitely a worthy addition to the community.
