Gear up for a summer at the lake
Wolfeboro, the oldest summer resort in America, is like an aged and beloved stone wall. It is full of character, history and our past. With the slam of a screened door, the urgency of a Band-Aid and crispy (not brown) s’mores, summer is here. Late summer nights are fireflies, drippy ice cream cones, sweaters and sunset cocktails on the deck. And yes, it’s always a marvelous night for a moon dance.
Wake to the savory smell of fresh-baked chocolate croissants, biscotti and toast slathered with lemon curd. It’s all at La Boca Bakery. Berry pies, cakes, lemon or lime tarts are a must for a cottage full of in-laws (points). Don’t forget the herbal spreads and pepper crisp crackers made onsite. New this happy season is Miss Vida Catherine, sweeter than a mixer full of chocolate.
There’s not much that says summer more than a red-and-white-checkered tablecloth to welcome steamers and lobster. You’ll find them at Mari’s Treasures, where the past is alive and elegant. Throw in some square candles to add design flair.
Heading out to the beach? Pick up a Scout washable tote (in a ton of colors and sizes) at Wolfeboro Casuals. You’ll want a classic straw hat to wear with your Hollywood sunglasses and maybe for fun a “Life is better at the lake” tee — or flaunt your pop culture knowledge with the “Camp Winnipesaukee” shirt made famous by Jimmy Fallon (known Winnipesaukee fan) and Justin Timberlake.
Having guests? Why not go for a new focal point in your cottage or camp (one would never be so stuffy as to count square feet up here). Stop by Cottage Surroundings and pick up a custom lamp or family table that will last for generations. Or check out the impressive array of rustic décor from pillows and rugs to custom signs and outdoor furniture.
Kids will find water and land toys at Black’s Paper and Gift Shop. Check out the ducky lawn croquet sets for the little ones. The real toy store for grown-ups is Dive Winnipesaukee, where you can indulge in paddleboards, diving lessons and all things fishing. Fact: There are about 1,000 boat wrecks in the lake. It was custom to tow old boats filled with rocks to sink in the lake.
For a little romance, stroll by The Wolfeboro Inn, where you’re sure to find a wedding party or two posing for photos. If you’re a June wedding guest, drop by The Kalled Gallery for a fabulous turquoise inlaid Lazy Susan wedding gift or the gold-dipped leaves serving set.
Come. Enjoy the past. Treasure the present. You’ll find Wolfeboro has a certain “je ne sais quoi” that makes for summer romance and fairy dust memories.
