Precious Stones

Metalsmith Wendolyn Hammer augments the natural beauty in beach stones with sterling silver and precious stones. She has worked in metal for more than 18 years, but has developed this new line using the naturally polished rocks she finds on the beach near her home in Portsmouth.

Hammer combs the sands for just the right stones, the ones that “feel good in her hand.” In her studio they are transformed into jewelry, knife handles and even candlesticks. She uses a water-fed diamond bit to engrave lines for embedded silver wire or to affix diamonds or other gems. The hand-friendly embellished rocks become handles for cheese knives and spreaders. She fabricates their blades using sterling silver for a final mix of polish, nature and invention.

Her studio will be open for the Portsmouth Artist’s walk in December and her work is available at Wisteria Tree Jewelers. — Susan Laughlin
