One Day Art Show and Sale with Jules Olitski

The late Jules Olitski, who spent almost 20 years summering on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire before passing away two years ago, will be represented in a special one-day art show and sale to benefit the Lakes Region Boys & Girls Club Saturday.

Olitski, who rose to international prominence in the 1960s as part of the second generation of American abstract artists, has been featured in one-man shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. As late as 1990 he was called “the best painter alive.”

Towards the end of his life, Olitski slowly began moving towards more realism in his paintings and 1996’s “Suspended Isle,” which will be in the show, represents that change, according to his daughter Lauren Olitski Poster. “It was created in his Bear Island studio,” she said. “He loved Bear Island and often used the colors of the lake as his inspiration.”

Prominent regional artist Peter Ferber will also have several paintings and prints for sale. Ferber has gained a strong following among New Hampshire’s Lakes Region residents for his remarkable talent of capturing the essence of classic lakeside living. His illustrations have appeared in numerous national magazines as well as in several books, and his paintings have been exhibited in many shows throughout New England and the Midwest.

Poster, who is also an accomplished painter, has several works in the show. Her paintings have been shown at galleries in Toronto, Boca Raton, Fla. and Portland, Me., as well as at her own galleries in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Palm Beach, Fla.

At least 10 other local talented artists – both painters and photographers – will have works on display and for Saturday’s sale. In addition, “The Lakes Region of New Hampshire: Four Seasons, Countless Memories,” the recently published photographic book of the area, will be on sale with editor Ray Carbone available to sign copies.

Patrick’s Pub & Eatery of Gilford will be serving its award-winning clam chowder at the show from noon to 2 p.m., and other refreshments will be available throughout the day.

The Art Show & Sale is part of a month-long Designer Show House program benefiting the Lakes Region Boys & Girls Club. New Hampshire designers have transformed the interior and exterior of an exquisite Meredith Bay home with stunning views of the Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains into a glorious space the public is invited to visit.

The house is open Wednesdays through Sundays (and Columbus Day) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 18.
