Manchester's The Gyro Spot to Open Second Location
The Gyro Spot comes to Dover this spring
If you want a burrito, then there are usually plenty of nearby Mexican restaurants to choose from. In the mood for Chinese food? No problem, that’s everywhere too. And pizza? Turn any corner, you can find a slice.
Well, how about gyros? Those who live or work in Manchester know just where to find them, thanks to The Gyro Spot. However, more residents of New Hampshire will soon get to explore the same world of authentic Greek gyros, because The Gyro Spot will open a new location in the heart of downtown Dover this coming spring.
Having grown up in the restaurant world, owner Alex Lambroulis made the decision to open The Gyro Spot in the summer of 2012, and from there business grew fast. Now, five years later, Lambroulis looks to expand and let the town of Dover experience the same unique tastes of Greece.
“In Greece, every corner has a gyro place you know — it’s like Dunkin’ Donuts,” says Lambroulis, who has family in Greece he visits often. “We have them there on every corner.”
As he explains, the gyro is the ultimate street food of Greece so he thought, why couldn’t this work here? And it definitely did. Lines at popular times often stretch from the counter to the door (though wait times are small), and at no point will you find it completely empty. And this past year, the restaurant was featured on an episode of “Phantom Gourmet,” which aired several times throughout the season (watch it here).
With many regulars and several new customers daily, they’ve fostered a fun, familiar and friendly neighborhood atmosphere. Their honesty and commitment to fresh ingredients and in-house food creations are what sets them apart from other competing fast service restaurants.
Each morning, the vegetables are cut up for the day, and are used to prepare the many offerings that expand far beyond the basic gyro. The menu that caters to many audiences, from pork Gyro’s with French fries (not on the side, but inside the gyro itself) topped with a yogurt-based Tzatziki sauce and their traditional G-sauce (Lambroulis’ personal favorite), to lighter options such as fresh salads and even a unique lentil soup. Affordable and quick, with walk-up counter service, it’s become a local favorite.
Lambroulis is excited to be a part of the fast-growing town of Dover, and when the ideal location became available, it was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. He says that as soon as they signed the lease, they were surrounded by support from neighboring businesses.
The Gyro Spot prides themselves on their environment, not just the food. “We want to know your name — we don’t take a number when we take your order,” says Lambroulis. “A lot of our regulars develop nick names.”
They hope to continue expanding, and there is even talk of a possible Gyro Spot food truck in the future. For now, Lambroulis and his team are focused on getting their new location up and running, to meet some new people along the way, and to bring some of their welcoming Greek roots into the town of Dover.
