Letters to the Editor
Northern Exposure
I have been tardy in commending you on your recent attention to things north of Concord. New Hampshire Magazine is really taking a look. That is great. The features on the Flower Farm, the Old Man and the Lupine Fest in May were all well done. I also enjoyed reading the trip from Lancaster to Franconia and the Cheap Eats focus on Miller’s Café. Also the Lupine Festival.
I believe that Newt Washburn, basket maker, would be a great feature as would a look at WREN as they reconfigure their Art Gallery and Gift Shop to do more retail business. The Maplewood has been purchased and is being brought back to Donald Ross standards. A 122-unit housing development is also starting there. Would you ever do a Main Street UpFront feature on Bethlehem?

Live Free and Buckle Up?
I was originally attracted to New Hampshire by the fact that it appeared to be a small oasis of sanity in a sea of big-government lunacy in the U.S Northeast. When I saw the signs informing visitors that those under age 18 were required to wear seat belts, but that adults could choose for themselves, I knew it was the place for me. I bought a vacation home in the North Conway area, bought a subscription to New Hampshire Magazine and prepared to make a permanent move.
You can imagine my disappointment, then, when I read the June 2007 issue and saw your Snap Judgment in support of government control of whether or not I wear a seat belt. Worse yet, one of your arguments is that it would free up the $3.7 million in blackmail funds being withheld by the federal government. Shame on you! I only hope that “Live Free or Die” means more to the rest of the residents of this state than it does to you.

A Singular Mistake
As a long-time teacher of English, now retired, I know that language changes — try “Beowulf” in the original, or “The Canterbury Tales.”
Is it possible that the singular and plural of those of the feminine gender have been reduced to one word: woman?
Before I read one word of the contents of the May issue of New Hampshire Magazine, I was startled by the bold print above the magazine title: “44 Remarkable Woman in the Arts.”
As I was saying, language changes, and I don’t even know a blog from a Blackberry, but I hope you haven’t changed all women to one woman.

Where in the World
My husband and I were just looking at the June issue, “Our Seacoast Unfolded.” There are numerous errors in where the numbers are located on the various maps — the Rye Harbor State Park #9 is on the wrong side of Rye Harbor, North Beach #3 is on the wrong end of the wall, Fuller Gardens #5 should be north of North Hampton state beach #6, not south of it.
Some may wonder if those writing about New Hampshire have actually been here.
The food pictures further on in the issue look yummy, though.

Correction: In “25 Great Tastes” in the June issue, the Orchard Street Chop Shop of Dover was incorrectly named as the Orchard Street Chop House.
