January Bookshelf: Wonders of the Whites

During the week Robert Kozlow is a dentist in Meredith, doing the close-up work that dentists do. Away from the office, though, he turns his attention to the broad expanses of the White Mountains. He’s hiked them for 20 years and knows the hidden places where they are the most beautiful. Fortunately he’s taken his camera along.

His stunning photos are now compiled in his newly released coffee-table book, “The White Mountains: A Photographic Journey” [Huntington Graphics, $29.95]. Valleys and summits, ponds and lakes, waterfalls and flowers — Kozlow has captured them in all their glory throughout the changing seasons.

His book means those of us not likely to hike into the wilderness can nonetheless experience it — and learn better its grandeur. There are also photos of places familiar to most, like the Mt. Washington Hotel and The Cog railroad, but Kozlow’s photographic perspective provides a different take on them. Two not-to-miss photos — a Sno-Cat ascending the Mt. Washington Auto Road in drifted snow and, of course, the Old Man, still there, still proud, as he surveys his domain.
