Fire and Lights

The beauty of glass is enhanced by light, and with Philip Jacobs’ lamps that light comes from within. The North Conway glassblower has developed a full line of lighting that showcases the magic of molten glass — its fluid patterns and intense chroma. Jacobs free-forms the globes and controls the marbled patterns by careful manipulation, using rods, frits and powders for the color. The earth, the sky and the White Mountains are his inspiration.

The line — from pendants to table lamps — is both beautiful and functional. Jacobs considers the lighting “future heirlooms,” as each piece is a one-of-a-kind collectable that is signed and dated. His work is in more than 100 shops all over the world.

You can watch Jacobs making lamps and vessels at his 2,115-degree furnace and then visit the League of N.H. Craftsmen shop next door that displays his work and that of other state-juried league members. The shop focuses on finely crafted items and is run by his wife Karissa, a ceramicist. The team bought the former League shop and opened it in October with renovations and the studio space for Philip.
Jacobs will exhibit at the annual League Fair at Sunapee State Park from August 4 to 12. Lamp prices range from $300 to $1,700.
