On the heels of the UNH visit by Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Food movement, a group has announced the establishment of a Seacoast Convivium.

Slow Food Seacoast is expecting to announce a public informational meeting, most likely in July. Contact Michelle Moon at Strawbery Banke (422-7507) for more information. Meanwhile, the Monadnock Region Slow Food Convivium is busy with summer plans. In the works is a Heritage/Heirloom cookout for August 20 on the grounds of the Peterborough Historical Society. Heirloom vegetables, local bison burgers, local organic roasted chicken, a grand blueberry pie bake-off and tastings of local cider are featured, plus master gardening wonder Roger Swain will share all you’ll ever need to know about blueberries.

Similar to Slow Food is our own N.H. Farm to Restaurant Initiative. Now that produce is coming in Growers’ Dinners are at hand. July 21: The Woodstock Inn Station & Brewery, No. Woodstock; July 29: Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa, Whitefield; August 7: Carpaccio Ristorante Italiano, Hanover. Call the individual restaurants for reservations.

Sadly, I report that Sebastian Carosi is no longer at the Shaker Table in Canterbury. His enthusiasm for our local farm to restaurant initiative will be missed.

Even more sad, Baldwin’s On Elm has closed after five years of innovative cuisine. “It has been a wonderful five years and I want to thank all our loyal customers, vendors and staff who contributed to our success,” notes Baldwin. “I have no immediate plans other than to take some time off and enjoy time with my son, Liam.”
