Craft Beer Comes to Concord
Lithermans Limited Brewery brings music-tinged brews to the capital
After an opening last Friday, Concord is home to New Hampshire's newest craft brewery: Lithermans Limited. Founders and co-owners Steve Bradbury Jr. and Michael Hauptly-Pierce have been in development on the brewery since 2013 and moved into their south Concord location in October 2015. "With the efforts the city has put into revitalization," Bradbury says, "we knew it was the right place to build our business. What is a cool town without a brewery?"
"People have begun to incorporate buying fresh, local beer into their purchasing habits," says Hauptly-Pierce, "and we want to fill that niche for the greater Concord area." Offering musical spins on classical styles, the brewery will offer five beers in the beginning, including Self-Titled pale ale and Bowwow Yippie Yo IPA. Beers are available for tasting and growler fills on site at the brewery on Fridays and Saturdays, and the brews will be stocked at select craft beer stores and grocery stores starting in mid-April.
The tasting room is focused on creating a comfortable and unique experience for guests. The musical theme found in the beers' names extends to the taproom's decor, with old 45s lacquered into barstools and framed albums and photos of the owners with musicians lining the walls.
"We are putting a lot of attention toward quality, but we also see opportunities in other aspects of running a brewery," says Hauptly-Pierce. "Many breweries have great liquid but struggle getting it to market. Others have great branding but unimpressive products. With 20 years of brewing experience, and over 25 years of wholesale account management and marketing, we have some added skill sets often lacking in start-up [nanobreweries]." The company also boasts the branding prowess of Concord-based SteveLee Design for the crafting of their visual identity.
The name Lithermans Limited is a play on the archaic phrase "Litherman's load." "The modern analog is returning from the grocery store with a car full of groceries and attempting to carry it all in one trip," says Bradbury. "You fumble with the keys and the door, the bags rip… You end up expending more effort than if you have broken it up into several sensible loads. That is a Litherman's load."
Lithermans Limited Brewery brings a whole new lineup of craft brew to the Concord area. The question, as the company's slogan asks, is simply, "How much can you carry?"
