Spotlight on Dr. Tamara Lovelace
Top Chiropractor Dr. Tamara Lovelace blends her disciplines as a chiropractic sports doctor with physical therapy, orthopedics and rehabilitation. This year the Portsmouth chiropractor has been selected to work with the Olympic Team USA’s bobsled, skeleton and luge teams as well as with their BMX supercross team. It’s a challenging assignment for any doctor, requiring skills ranging from trauma management to musculoskeletal treatment of virtually every part of the body.
You are an accomplished athlete (and dancer) yourself. How did that segue into chiropractic training? Chiropractic played an important role in helping me reach my full athletic potential and performing at my peak performance level. I realized I wanted to help others in the way the my doctor had helped me.
So chiropractic can be used to improve physical performance, not just ease pain? It is often stated in elite athletic populations that a chiropractic sports doctor is an essential performance-enhancing component of the team. That the US Olympic Teams use and travel with chiropractic sports doctors speaks volumes to the value they bring.
You also work with musical performers like The Wiggles and the “American Idol” tours. How different are those worlds? A lot more similar than many might imagine. Performers tend to have long, packed travel schedules, often sleeping on tour buses, planes and cramped dressing rooms. Many also perform intense dance routines. As a result they end up with the same musculoskeletal issues that elite athletes contend with.
Any good stories from your work with Olympians? One gold medalist who heard I had car trouble trying to get to the venue on the first day of competitions asked why I didn’t just call and ask him to come pick me up. I laughed and told him I thought he might be busy, given we had qualifying races that morning. He replied that we are a team and, if one teammate needs help, the others are always prepared to jump into action.
What don’t people understand about chiropractic? There is a lot of education and training involved. Most start with a four-year bachelor of science degree followed by a four-year doctor of chiropractic degree. Many will go on to specialize in a particular field, similar to how medical doctors might.
How has the field changed since you’ve been involved? The specialty of chiropractic sports medicine has become much stronger and more prevalent. As a result, the field as a whole has become much more evidence-based and mainstream. More and more people are discovering how chiropractic can help them reach not only their athletic goals, but also help them live healthier lives by staying physically fit and active later into life.

Methodology:
Professional Research Services contacted over 400 licensed chiropractors within the State of New Hampshire through direct mail and email broadcast. PRS asked each chiropractor in a nationwide online survey to nominate the chiropractors they deemed the best in chiropractic care across New Hampshire. Each chiropractor was allowed to recommend up to three colleagues in the field of chiropractic medicine. Once the ballots were complete, each nominee was carefully evaluated on the basis of the survey results, the legitimacy of their license, and their current standing with the New Hampshire State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Chiropractors who received the highest number of votes in chiropractic medicine are reflected in the Top Chiropractor list.
