Two New Exhibitions at SNHU's McIninch Art Gallery @ McIninch Art Gallery | Manchester | New Hampshire | United States

The McIninch Art Gallery, located in Robert Frost Hall, at Southern New Hampshire University proudly presents the fall opening of two upcoming shows, “Mono No Aware” by Dave Humphreys and “Selections” from the McIninch Art Gallery Collection.

There will be an opening reception and artists’ talk on Thursday September 19, from 5-7 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Mono No Aware

As a Japanese phrase, mono no aware is difficult to conceptualize in English. While it can be defined as “the pathos of things” or “an empathy toward things,” the best way to think of it is as an emotion, not a concept. Mono no aware is the longing found in these moments, the sadness of being able to experience something only once and never again; it is the appreciation that these unique moments have transpired, but still exist in your memory. The narrative of Mono No Aware seeks to explore this concept through photography and video by capturing the fleeting moments between night and day, recording and documenting these ephemera as a testament to their existence.

The selections in this gallery display varying topics in works of art from the McIninch Art Gallery’s Collection. Nikki Rosato’s intricate cut paper silhouettes in Object XI when juxtaposed with Jesse Burke’s sweeping panorama of Diamonds in the Rough explores the idea of self-identity and the connections we create to the environment around us. Enrique Chagoya’s print The Thingly Thingness of Things explores the ways we recognize others and ways interaction with different cultures and identities play out. His prints, La Portentosa de La Muerte I and La Portentosa Vida de La Muerte II, alongside photographer Tanya Marcuse’s visually stunning Fallen prints, explores the concept of life and death in art. The three Elliot Porter photographs from his Intimate Landscapes Portfolio explores, isolation, nature and abstract expressionism. The aim of this exhibition is for the viewer to explore and make connections through slow looking, uncovering the complexity of the artworks through prolonged observation.
