Dr. Cecilia Gaposchkin, a professor of history at Dartmouth College, will discuss her grandmother’s work in astronomy and astrophysics. In 1925, Dr. Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin was the first person to graduate from Radcliffe College with a Ph.D. in astronomy. Her thesis, “Stellar Atmospheres: A Contribution to the Observational Study of High Temperature in the Reversing Layers of Stars,” proposed that helium and hydrogen were the main components of stars.
