Escaping with mermaids, fairies and whales.

"It makes your heart sing for a minute or two," says artist Theresa LaBrecque, and that is why she loves, and paints, whimsy. Her whales, mermaids and fairies allow her a brief escape to "somewhere else." And she hopes those who view her work find the same.

LaBrecque, a Northwood resident, began her whimsical work in clay and moved to canvas and oils in recent years. She lived for a time on Cape Cod and it was there, she says, that "the mermaids claimed me." Then the whales did, too.

She sculpted and painted them ("they came out of my fingertips"), and became an established artist there. Two children's books - "Tea Time for Mermaids" and "A Whale of a Good Time" - followed.

Now back in New Hampshire, LaBrecque has been "claimed" by fairies. She is converting her historic farm near Saddleback Mountain into a fairy destination - with ceramic fairy houses set about, fairy chairs made from tree stumps and a fairy gazebo. "It's something that's quite fun and memorable," she says. And expect a book about fairies soon.

"I naturally take life a little too seriously. As an artist, when I have whimsy on the canvas, I'm happier. Just looking at it can transport me."
