Juicy ripe tomatoes in winter are the holy grail for restaurant chefs yet locavore diners eschew them as being too energy consumptive - It takes a lot of fuel to ship them from South America.

Well, Dan and Terry Nelson have found a way to grow tomatoes in their 30-by-60-foot greenhouse in the northern chill of Wentworth. The learning curve was steep, but they cut their electric bill in half with LED lighting, conquered fungus with nematodes, beat aphids with lady bugs and heated their space with cord wood.

The plants are started in July and by November they are ready to harvest, maturing in a solution of nutrients that changes composition as the plants develop. Currently, they deliver to Six Burner Bistro, Bob's Shurfine Market and Peppercorns in Plymouth, among others.

You can find Hobbit HIll Farm tomatoes ($4 lb.) at the new Tilton Farmers Market held every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find it 1/2 west of I-93 Exit 20.
