Local Wines for Holiday Dinners

Walpole Mountain View Winery offers great wines for holiday dinners and some fantastic views

Owner and winemaker Virginia Carter is proud that all the wines produced at Walpole Mountain View Winery are estate grown on the Barnett Hill property. This is a challenge in our harsh climate, but by choosing hardy French-American hybrids and artful blending of varietals this hilltop winery offers a nice array of wines. From the tasting room you can sample up to six wines with the purchase of a souvenir glass, buy light snacks and enjoy the view — and it is some view. It was the stunning location that inspired Carter and her family to plant a vineyard in 2004.

Their list is now quite extensive and all of the wines are created from the 32 varieties of grapes grown onsite. To complement a turkey dinner, Carter suggests their Barnett Hill Blush, which is a blend of red grapes with slight tannins from fruit acids. The Dolce Far Niente may be the perfect choice for dessert if you wish to forgo the pumpkin pie.

Find an extensive list from crisp whites to bold reds to a few sweeter choices at the winery until Christmas Eve when they close for the season. The gift shop is also stocked with artisanal gifts for the wine lover. Otherwise, a selection of wines are available at Monadnock shops, including Hannah Grimes in Keene.
