Cornerstone Awards 2009

The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of New Hampshire, through its Sales and Marketing Council, recognize excellence in the building industry through their annual July Cornerstone Awards. New Hampshire Magazine is proud to present this portfolio of winning residential entries in interior design, new construction, remodeling, community service and more.New Construction >> Single Family Detached $1.5M — $3M Beautifully Rustic – Best in Show Full of character, this three-floor beauty of a home was built to capture Canadian architecture of the 1600s and of the 1920s and ’30s. The spectacular stone exterior, reminiscent of Quebec’s early 17th-century Norman-style buildings, is paired with Montreal’s 20th-century designs to create a home that achieves warmth and class. The House on Goose Pond boasts a granite exterior that was built using Corinthian Granite. Inside, the spacious kitchen spills into the great room, enhancing social interaction between the hosts and their guests. The second level of the home consists of four large bedroom suites, two of which contain partially-exposed heavy timbers that capture the beauty and strength of the home. A third floor, which functions as an exercise/study/office, features a “crow’s nest” lookout for viewing the quiet pond. Traditional and beautifully rustic, this home by Old Hampshire Designs is a dynamic property sure to foster serenity and happiness. Old Hampshire Designs Inc., GOLD Green Gables on the Lake Stylish and spacious, this Lake Winnipesaukee home offers 5,184 square feet of space including five bedrooms and five baths. The site of the home was chosen specifically for its breathtaking mountain views. One of the highlights of this Adirondack-style home is its six-column covered entrance with nearly full-length windows. Rustic and modern, this house was built by Stabile Homes with energy-efficient materials and a goal of creating a low-maintenance living area. Stabile Homes, SILVER Understated Elegance The detail-oriented clients of this home wanted their living area to match how they live and depict their impeccable style: “understated elegance, not extravagance.” The design of this home makes it easy for the clients to move between the rooms they most frequently used, as the kitchenette, great room, library, bedroom and bathroom are all centrally located. Rooms like the sun room and formal dining room create an escape crafted with elegance. Peterborough Building Consulting, LLC, BRONZE New Construction >> Single Family Detached $1M — $1.5M Rustic Overtones This mountain-top retreat sits high above the city of Charlottesville, with dramatic views and a timber-framed entry porch that is raised up on a stone foundation. The house’s rustic appearance is enhanced by its red cedar shingle walls and cedar shake roof. High ceilings and few walls create an open and expansive effect as guests enter the home. In the kitchen visitors will find an island with two ovens, a porcelain country sink, cherry flat-paneled cabinets and soapstone counters. The loft upstairs is opened up to the great room by an iron balustrade. A window seat at the end of the stairs, a special touch, is the perfect place to sit, read and see who is coming through the door. Timberpeg, GOLD New Construction >> Single Family Detached $800K — $1M Energy Efficient This home was built to replace a 1950s house that had a floor plan with features the homeowners liked. However, insulation and windows were not up to current building standards, making the home extremely energy inefficient, and the mechanical systems were sadly outdated. The river side of this home opens up with windows in every living space. The night view shows just how transparent an energy-efficient home can be. Timberpeg, GOLD New Construction >> Single Family Detached $650K — $800K Gem of the Neighborhood This home’s owner gave Epoch Homes a goal of creating a house that fit with the Arts and Crafts-style homes in the neighborhood. This home, which was built with the modular building system, consists of seven modules in all, and a site-built garage was also added. Crown Point Cabinets of Claremont was called in to design and supply the kitchen, master bath and pantry. With this home the client can easily maintain her work-from-home living style, as her home office is accessible off the foyer. This Greenwich, Conn., Arts and Crafts Gambrel is as magnificent as it is practical. Epoch Homes, GOLD New Construction >> Single Family Detached $450K — $650K Spacious and Warm in Northwood An elegant creation of post-and-beam accents, stone pillars and wainscoting, this dream home stands proud above the lake. The structural cupola and hip roof design create soaring interior ceilings. Geothermal-powered radiant heat echoes the warmth of the natural wood interior and glowing room colors. An heirloom for many generations to enjoy has been born. Ridgeview Construction Inc., GOLDNew Construction >> Specialty: Green Interior Design >> Model Home High-quality and Green Not only is this model home beautiful, it has the highest level certification given by the U.S. Green Building Council for achievement in green home building. Among the environmentally-friendly features of the home: It’s designed to maximize space and comfort while minimizing square footage, thus reducing energy costs. Products and appliances that conserve water and energy were used, as were products that don’t release significant pollutants. Wood products came from sustainably managed forests. The home was sited to save old growth tree and natural wetland areas; the landscape was designed to encourage wildlife habitat. Abode Builders of New England, GOLD Residential >> Architectural Design Carriage Manor Home Hooksett’s Carriage Manor is a community of homes that has been exclusively designed by Alternative Designs. Lot 3, Cornerstone’s Architectural Design gold winner, was built with the intention of providing owners with an affordable living environment where they get what they pay for. Buyers looking for small but well-equipped homes are sure to find the value they’re in search of. The home, currently on the market, is 3,427 square feet of family-oriented living including a playroom, spacious kitchen and an expansive great room. Alternative Designs Inc., GOLD. Grandview Estates Home One of the houses in this community designed exclusively by Alternative Designs, this hilltop home boasts a new feature: an oversized attic bonus room to round out a whopping 5,800 square feet of living space. Alternative Designs Inc., SILVER Hollis Home Contemporary meets traditional in this revamped Hollis home. The owners wanted to add an office, expand a guest suite, provide a walk-in closet and master bath to a master bedroom and create a meditation room. With the help of Dennis Mires, P.A. The Architects, the existing building rose to a two-story form with multiple shed roof lines; the concept was to end the form in a new three-level compatible tower. Each space has plenty of natural light and commanding views. Dennis Mires, P.A. The Architects, SILVERInterior Design >> Residential Interior Innovation With a budget that could not accommodate both an addition to this kitchen and high-end features, David R. Crupi’s team proposed a layout that gave the owners the functionality they needed and the custom look they wanted. An island and breakfast area provide seating, and cherry cabinets that meet KCMA’s Environmental Stewardship Certification drench the room with warmth. The design is visually pleasing, and it provides generous counterspace for food preparation next to strategically-placed appliances. David R. Crupi LLC, GOLD A House Called “Goosebumps” With confidence in previously completed work by Village House Interiors’ Maria Perron, the owners of this camp trusted her input on the redesign of their home. Unique designs like the kitchen area’s booth-style seating and the individually-designed bedrooms make this home one that guests frequently praise. Village House Interiors, SILVERDesign >> Best Kitchen Heart of the Home The moldings in this kitchen are the main focal point. The ceiling, which is beautifully coffered, makes the room feel even larger than it actually is. Carvings on the island and near the cook-top help those areas stand up and stand out. Another highlighted feature of this kitchen is the wine bar. The Sub-Zero wine refrigerator has a glass front door and two drawers. As functional as it is for entertainment, this kitchen’s desk area and cabinetry makes the space highly family-friendly. Granite State Cabinetry, GOLD Neutral and Natural An addition to this kitchen provided enough space for several cooks, a dramatic vaulted barrel ceiling and a place for kids to do homework before dinner. A natural stone back splash plays on the neutral color palette and complements the dark wood floor. Not Just Kitchens, BRONZE A Whole New Feel A kitchen renovation for this townhouse has made the whole living space seem full of new potential for the owner. The kitchen has more storage than he was used to, and with its wine fridge and snack bar it is a wonderful environment to cook and entertain in. The kitchen opens into the family room, expanding entertaining space and making it easier to enjoy a TV show while the owner cooks or eats. Dream Kitchens, SILVER Design >> Bathroom Luxury The owners of this Mr. and Mrs. bathroom knew what they wanted: a shower for two, some private space for each and a design that would mean they could “live in this house forever.” A luxurious walk-in shower separates their personal spaces customized for specific needs. It is designed for beauty, comfort and for aging together. Dream Kitchens, GOLD Remodeling >> Kitchen over $100KBeaming with Delight The existing beams of this kitchen were hand-sanded and stained to match the new cabinetry. The owners, up for change. discussed with Cedar Mill Group the idea of reversing the kitchen and dining room areas to create a more comfortable environment. Starting over may have seemed like a daunting task, but it allowed the builders to work around frequently-used areas until absolutely necessary, allowing the kitchen to remain fully operational while the changes took place. This dramatic transformation created a space where everyone can — and wants — to be. Cedar Mill Group Inc., GOLD Remodeling >> Kitchen $60 — $100K Old-Fashioned Charm The kitchen in this 200-year-old home was outdated and problematic for the owners, a family of six. Details like crown molding, spindle fluting and antique glass doors merge old-fashioned charm with usability. 3w design inc, GOLD Room for Two The owners of this European-themed kitchen wanted a space they could both comfortably work together in. This new area brings rooms together to create flow and brings into the home views of the pond outside. John Stanek Custom Builder, SILVER Remodeling >> Kitchen $35K — $60K Storage Savvy GM Roth’s designs proved to be storage savvy and space conscious as they tackled this small kitchen. Storage has been more than doubled, function has increased and the open and dressy feeling makes this kitchen an integral part of the home. GM Roth Design Remodeling Inc., GOLD Reaching New Heights Specialty Kitchens brought this 1980s kitchen up to speed as cabinets were raised to create a minimalistic and open feel. Striped wallpaper and a floral border were replaced by a decorative tile mosaic. Specialty Kitchens, SILVER Remodeling >> Kitchen Under $35K Boldly Bicontinental Hailing from England, the owners of this kitchen wanted a European space peppered with American elegance. Keeping the owners’ tastes and resale value in mind, Boardwalk North created a kitchen with European flare and American tradition. Boardwalk North, GOLD Cutting Edge Exposed beams were shaped to account for taller wall cabinets, thus creating storage and a stunning impression of the crown molding cutting through the painted beams. Specialty Kitchens, SILVER Let There Be Light The owner of this 1960s-era kitchen was ready for the space to come out of its dark ages. The effect of the under-cabinet and recessed lighting combined with pendant lights over the seating area is impressive. Dream Kitchens, BRONZE Remodeling >> Residential Over $500KStarting From Scratch It became apparent that approximately 90 percent of the original structure of this 60-year-old house would have to go, but John Stanek Custom Builders Inc. was able to create for these owners the dream home they’d been waiting for. An additional floor, complete with three bedrooms and private bath, was added to make guests feel comfortable in a more spacious environment. John Stanek Custom Builders Inc., GOLD Remodeling >> Residential $250K — $500K Fit as a Fiddle The owner of this Bedford home can forgo a gym membership with the home’s new recreational pool, half court gym, pitching and batting cage, fitness area and toilet/changing rooms. Dennis Mires, P.A. The Architects, GOLD Growing Better With Age Owning a home built in 1775 does not always suit a modern family’s lifestyle. An addition, new windows and doors and oil-rubbed bronze fixtures help this American classic preserve its antiquity. 3w design inc, SILVER Remodeling >> Residential $50K — $100K Transitional Property The owners of this home scrapped their porch to create an additional room for entertaining and a transitional room that allowed for entry into the home as well as this new family room. GM Roth Design Remodeling Inc., GOLD (Birds) eye-catching CMG’s signature touch was placed on this room, complete with Brazilian cherry floors with a double birdseye maple border that dazzles the perimeter of the room.
