Thirty years ago Celeste Longacre was trying to figure out what her life work was to be. One day the thought came to her that perhaps her first name was no accident, that she was fated to deal in celestial matters. "I never looked back," Celeste says. Today the Alstead resident is an astrologer who is well-regarded enough to be featured in magazines such as "The Old Farmer's Almanac." She is also the author of the book "Love Signs," which explores how to stay happy in a relationship.
What's your sign?
Aries. That means I'm pretty independent and spontaneous. I like to be active, don't give up and don't hold grudges. Also, what you see is what you get. Don't ask me if I like your dress unless you really want to know.
What did your horoscope say about doing this interview?
I'm not big on reading horoscopes, but my charts say the aspects are pretty good today. The moon is in Gemini, which facilitates communication, and the moon is trining Venus, which puts people in good moods.
You don't read horoscopes?
No. The only way they'll be accurate is by using the whole system to write them and that's a lot more work than most horoscope writers do. When I do a reading for someone, I'm not just looking at sun signs. I look at the moon and the planets and how they aspect each other. It's much more complicated.
What do you say to people who think astrology is a bunch of hooey?
I'll tell you that astrology was once used a lot. The Three Wise Men used astrology to find the Christ Child. Once the scientific model became the model of choice, astrology went into the background. My feeling is I don't let skepticism bother me; people believe what they believe.
How's President Obama's chart?
I like his chart. He's a Leo with Aquarius rising. That means he's a humanitarian to the core. He also has Gemini moons, which means he's interested in everything.
Were you surprised Nancy Reagan was into astrology?
That was common knowledge in the astrology community; it took 20 years for that cat to get out of the bag. I really think Reagan got where he did was partially because of astrology.
What signs have the most harmonious relationships?
Aries and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Gemini and Aquarius, Cancer and Scorpio, and Libra and everybody.
Is my daughter going to meet a tall, dark, handsome stranger?
I can pinpoint the times when the aspects for meeting someone are good, but I'm not psychic, so I can't say.
If it's all in the stars, can you change your fate?
The stars show what's been given - what you do with it is infinitely more important.
