Guide to 2014 Summer Theater in New Hampshire

NH is home to some truly excellent theater. Whether you appreciate Shakespeare or Broadway, there's sure to be something happening that you'll love. Here you'll find, in alphabetical order, seasonal summer theater venues from across the state.

This summer you could spend a sunny afternoon with the family watching a production of "Shrek the Musical" at the Prescott Park Arts Festival in Portsmouth, experience "A Mid Summer Night's Dream" on a warm evening with Theatre Under the Stars, see an original work at The Players' Ring, enjoy a night at the opera with Opera North and much, much more.

Advice to the Players

July-October
As Hamlet said in his advice to the players, “Be not too tame neither, but let your own discretion be your tutor” and head over to the Advice to the Players to hear the challenging but inspiring words of Shakespeare. Advice to the Players is an award-winning company that brings Shakespeare’s words to life every March, August and October in Sandwich. This company has been presenting Shakespeare performances and workshops in New Hampshire’s Lakes and Mountain Region since 1999. The company is a mix of professionals, community members and teenagers.

Stay tuned for details on the July Second Stage play information - last year's "Midsummer Mirth Shakespeare Cabaret" was a big hit. In August "The Merry Wives of Windsor" comes alive at the Sandwich Fairgrounds and at the Town Hall Theatre. On October 25 head to the Barnstromers Theatre in Tamworth for "Shakespearian Idol 2014."

Andy's Summer Playhouse

June 28-August 16
Andy's Summer Playhouse features innovative plays by children but it's intended to be enjoyed by those of all ages. From the website: "Andy’s programs foster creative collaborations between children and professional artists who work in a variety of media: performance art, theater, dance, music, puppetry, video, set and lighting design and playwriting. In the forty years of its existence, Andy’s has grown from a summer play produced by two school teachers, to its current state as a fully equipped summer theater, with a staff of over 15 professional artists, involving over 250 children and over 3,000 audience members each year."

The Barnstormers Theatre

7/8–8/30
Located in the small village of Tamworth lies the only professional summer theatre company in America that still puts on eight full productions in eight weeks. Being one of three Equity theatres in NH, Barnstormers consists of over 40 professional actors, some of which have been performing at Barnstormers for 50 years.

Interlakes Summer Theatre

This company seeks to bring a wide variety of productions, from children’s theatre to old classics, to the masses.

Jean's Playhouse (Formerly the Papermill Theatre)

6/25–10/18
This North Country theatre has been open for 27 years and prides itself on bringing the community together. Over 150,000 locals have come out to support the theatre and each summer the children’s theatre entertains over 12,000 members of nearby communities. The new Jean's Playhouse (opened in the summer of 2012) features comfortable seating, a bigger lobby and better heating and air conditioning.

Leddy Center Classes

6/24–8/2
Getting your kids involved with music is a great way for them to meet new people and express themselves.

The Leddy Center for the Performing Arts offers three different summer theater camps. Choose from:

  • Voice camp with Mary Gatchell from June 23–July 3: Ages 6-9 from June 23-27 and ages 10-14 from June 30-July 3
  • Mini-Musical Camp I with Jennifer Solomon from July 28-August 1 Ages 5-7
  • Mini-Musical Camp II with Melissa Ransdell from July 28-August 1 Ages 8-10

An added bonus are all of the new renovations made to the theatre including a larger and deeper stage area, expanded seating capacity, and premium heating and cooling. Age requirements and prices vary.

New London Barn Playhouse

6/5–8/31
One of the oldest summer stock theatres in the country, the New London Barn Players combine emerging talent with seasoned professionals to produce quality theatre. Although some things have changed since its 1933 opening (such as the fifty-cent tickets) Mr. Holmes’ core mission still stands true - “To establish…a theatre group presenting dramas of stimulating artistic and literary merit.”

Opera North

Augst 5-19
Renowned opera stars share the stage with fresh talent — sans microphones — in this company. This intimate 710-seat theatre brings 20-25 of the best singers together to add to the already impressive repertoire of Opera North.

The Palace Theatre

5/27–8/21
The Palace Professional Theatre for Children Series takes the stage this summer at one of New Hampshire’s most well known and historic theatres. The beautiful 840-seated theatre is the only one of it’s kind in the area. The children’s series will have you and your children leave the theatre singing.

Peterborough Players

6/25–9/21
A true rustic theatre company, the Peterborough Players was founded in 1933 and perform in an 18th-century barn to this day, but don’t worry - there’s air conditioning. Each season seven main stage productions are showcased and two second company children shows.

The Players’ Ring

June-August
The Players’ Ring aims to promote local artists by performing only original works at an affordable price. Every year, the board of directors selects the production companies that will win a spot on the mainstage. Over 30 local production companies have presented their original works at “The Ring” and many of them return. There will also be Tuesday Night Improv from improv troupe Stranger than Fiction.

Prescott Park Arts Festival

6/27–8/24
Seacoast summer tradition since 1974. Held in the waterfront Prescott Park, the festival offers a full summer of events that are family appropriate. This festival has had much success reaching over 3.5 million people through more than 10,000 productions.

Summer 2014 Performances: “Shrek The Musical" shows every Thursday-Sunday from June 27 to August 24.

Seacoast Repertory Theatre

6/13–8/27 (shows continue into the fall and winter as well)
This award-winning professional performance space once acted as the warehouse for the Portsmouth Brewing Company in the '70s but has since made a great addition to the seacoast community’s theatre life.

Theatre Under the Stars

June - August (Exact dates are TBA)
Under the Stars is a professional outdoor classical Shakespeare theatre company. In July and August they host a summer festival with outdoors and rainy-day indoor stages spread out across Waterville Valley, Plymouth and Manchester.

Weathervane Theatre

7/5–8/30
The Weathervane Theatre brings Broadway all the way to North Country New Hampshire for its 49th season this summer. Weathervane is the only professional alternating theatre repertory theatre in the country, producing seven shows in eight weeks – a different show every night.

The Winnipesaukee Playhouse

The Playhouse is a non-profit, award-winning theatre churning out high-energy shows. Newer to the theatre scene, The Playhouse was founded in 2004, but is still considered a gem to central NH.
