Description

A Spotlight Cafe show.

Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Hawk and Dove is an indie rock band whose calm-before-the-storm sound has been described as the “loudest quiet band you have ever heard” and “the psychedelic country David Bowie never wrote.” On Hawk and Dove’s 2012 album, This Yesterday Will Never End, the band mixes hauntingly beautiful ballads with thunderous stoner grooves to create a psychedelic rock sound that has never been heard before.

Though singer Elijah Miller and Guitarist John Kleber met at summer camp when they were 13 years old, it wasn’t until they stumbled across each other 12 years later that they discovered their shared interest in music. Along with drummer AJ Sausville, and bass, keys, and violin players Stephanie Sanders and Joan Chew they have created a powerful sound that references multiple genres and histories of rock, country, psychedelia, and indie music, making their sound contemporary and unique.

After playing in venues and honing their material all around the city, Hawk and Dove took 2011 to record their first full length album This Yesterday Will Never End. Truly a journey at 13 songs and over an hour in length, this record invites the listener to explore the middle place where we all reside. Elijah’s lyrics curl around memories shared and imagined as John's angular guitar plays the shards of glass that simultaneously bind and repel us. All the while, the beautiful and surreal orchestral performances of Stephanie, Joan, and AJ envelop the words and shards in punches and strings of vibrant color.

After the huge success of their 2009 EP, Rocking Chair, Hawk and Dove have performed regularly in some of New York City’s most distinguished venues. With a steadily growing following and a tightly polished live show, Hawk and Dove have proven to be the loudest quiet band you have ever heard.

DARLINGSIDE

Under one roof in New England’s Pioneer Valley, Darlingside came together with five songwriters, a mandolin, a cello and violin, guitars and drums, a chorus of voices, and a van named Chauncey. Holed up in their home between a cornfield and the Connecticut River, they forged a seamless, exhilarating sound at the intersection of rock, classical, and folk music. The band recently released their debut full-length album ‘Pilot Machines’ and are currently shaking rafters along the eastern seaboard with their vibrant live shows.

In an age of increasingly electronic music, Darlingside still values authentic performance on real instruments. The sound is characterized by multiple lead-vocalists, dreamy five-part harmonies, dominating cello and violin interjections, and a dynamic rock engine at the core. Darlingside traces its diverse sound to an eclectic array of musical origins: Auyon traveled and studied the traditional instruments of Brazil, Turkey and Ireland; Harris picked up the cello at age six, performing twice on NPR; Dave learned guitar as a street musician in Boston; Don toured nationally as a boy alto and played sunset cruises in Maine; Sam took up both celtic and jazz drumming at age seven. Together, the five close friends are a powerhouse of vocal, instrumental, songwriting and performing talent.

Following 2010’s self-recorded EP 1, Darlingside teamed up with producer Nathaniel Kunkel (Sting, Crosby/Nash, Maroon 5) in 2011 to turn their house into a hi-fi recording laboratory and playground. The result was Pilot Machines, an insistently melodic collection of new songs that feel both familiar and ground-breaking. The band is now touring behind an ambitious release, with three 7″ records culminating in a full-length album.
