The First Sign of Spring




Thanks to shows like "DC Cupcakes" and "Sex & The City," which created a frenzy around Magnolia Bakery in NYC, cupcakes have been in vogue for a number of years. You can even make your own giant cupcake at home using an "as seen on TV" cake mold. But the reign of the cupcake is finally coming to an end with that easily portable standby, the cookie, gaining in popularity.

Capitalizing on this trend is Cheryl Smith of The Bake Studio in Manchester. Starting three years ago in her home kitchen with only a two-rack oven, Cheryl began baking and designing deliciously detailed sugar cookies with royal icing. With shapes featuring various holiday, sports, camping, fruit, beach, bird, flower themes and more, Cheryl sells beautifully pre-packaged arrangements ranging from $3 to $12.99 at a handful of retailers in southern N.H. From the professional kitchen space she now leases on Commercial Street, she also offers appointment-only consultations for events and special occasions. "Offering a cookie buffet has become really popular," says Cheryl.

Where to Buy:Look for cookies from the Bake Studio at the following locations: Butter's Fine Food & Wine in Concord, Lull Farm in Hollis, Apotheca Flowers & Tea Chest in Goffstown and The Meat House locations in Bedford and Pembroke. As an added bonus, the 10 oz. cookie arrangement from the Bake Studio (up to $12.99 depending on retail location) comes in a recyclable basket with a removable liner, and both pieces (liner and basket) can be used in the oven.
